Jason S. Beattie knows what it’s like to be in the DE&I trenches. Since 2011, he has focused on growing supplier diversity of Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers alongside developing a diverse contingent pool of labor at Comcast.
“At Comcast procurement, supplier diversity is in our DNA. There isn’t a discussion with any supplier where this is not part of the agenda,” says Beattie, Comcast’s executive director, enterprise procurement.
Beattie and his team educate diverse suppliers on how to navigate Comcast’s procurement process. Through advising from our senior leadership team and key stakeholders, these suppliers can more equitably compete for opportunities. Beattie’s philosophy with new suppliers has been to “best position them for scale and success.”
As the architect and force behind the Comcast Contingent Solutions program — comprising the IT and professional contingent labor category — Beattie has had the satisfaction of seeing a material increase in candidates placed by diverse firms. At the same time, since 2014, diversity sub-categories are not just actively represented in the program; they have experienced growth as well. Leveraging Comcast’s success methodologies, the team is now helping build, from the ground up, the supplier diversity program at Sky (the business Comcast runs in Europe).
Beattie credits Comcast’s success to being strategic and operating a long term plan. “It’s intentional actions that really got us to where we are today,” he says. “You just can’t hope that growth will occur.”
The proof of Beattie’s success is in the supplier diversity initiative. It has been the key driver for expanding supplier diversity, which, in turn, has stimulated a more diverse pool of candidates over the years. He’s looking forward to expanding opportunities to a larger set of individuals domestically and helping chart the supplier diversity pathway for contingent labor forward globally, too.
