Early in her 24-year career with Allegis Group, Kim Sneeder took a deeper look at candidates who were being rejected for jobs and realized those most affected were women re-entering the market, underserved communities and veterans — and this cemented her commitment to DE&I.
From her first role as a recruiter with Aerotek through her appointment as managing director of CareerCircle in 2019, Sneeder has taken active roles in advancing DE&I.
“I’ve tried to focus on how we serve these communities, focus on equity over equality,” she says. “What do they need to get career ready? And then, how do we create a movement and a mindset shift in the industry so that managers will look at these different dimensions of a candidate and give them an opportunity?”
Sneeder has always served on DE&I boards within Allegis Group. Through the regional boards, she concentrated on ensuring diverse communities were represented internally. She also focused on attracting a diverse talent pipeline, not only promoting them but also ensuring they were promoted at the same pace as others.
“I want to see the statistics changed. I want to see more people hired, retained and promoted,” she says. “But what keeps me up at night is the human story, the people. The people who have been told over and over again, ‘You’re not qualified.’ The people who weren’t given an opportunity or who joined an organization and didn’t feel supported or comfortable.”
With CareerCircle, she has been making a measurable difference. For example, 75% of candidates who obtained jobs through the organization have been from historically excluded communities, she says. And CareerCircle hires above the IT industry average for Hispanics, Blacks and Black women. Last year, CareerCircle created a partnership with RISE, the momproject.org’s scholarship program committed to accelerating equity for moms and women of color in technology. CareerCircle secures scholarships and training to help prepare these women for roles in IT and then advocates for their hire post-completion. The partnership has upskilled over 3,000 women to date.
These opportunities create an impact that starts with the individual person — one life changed helps to create a movement and drive change across the industry, Sneeder says.
