Being involved in diversity, equity and inclusion isn’t just a job that you can do, it’s a job that you have to love and be very passionate about — and Korryn Williamson has that passion. Williamson joined Insight Global in 2018 and became the company’s first-ever director of DE&I in February 2021. “I love watching people grow and seeing the benefits of having a diverse group of people and the innovation and the change that we’ve been able to make,” she shares.
Williamson grew up in Stockton, California, which, while diverse, is still quite segregated. Her family lived on the white side of town, and Williamson recalls “it wasn’t until I moved to the Silicon Valley to attend San Jose State, one of the most diverse college campuses in the US, that I learned the benefits of being engulfed in a diverse environment.”
While that sparked her passion for diversity, it was her father, a Black man who succeeded in tech without a degree, who inspired her to pursue tech recruiting. “I wanted to help other hard workers like my father who didn’t have the financial means to finish a formal education, but still found opportunities to learn and grow his career in tech.”
Williamson feels Insight Global has a responsibility to advocate and educate to level the playing field for everyone, from women who haven’t had the right interview and compensation opportunities to veterans or those from historically excluded communities who don’t have a degree.
One example of her advocacy in action: a veteran with 21 years’ military experience whom companies dismissed for lack of a college degree. “This man was doing the same job in the military,” says Williamson, “so we worked with that company’s employee resource group who supports veterans, and we got him the job.”
Williamson also spearheaded the recent launch of Insight Global’s DE&I consulting arm, which helps other companies recognize the importance of diversity and create ways to implement and execute the change that needs to be made. Insight Global is excited to take all the research the company has done and apply it not only to its own workforce, but to clients and prospective clients across the country.
